The Big Bay Point Lighthouse. It is currently under threat of development by the owners. What was a beautiful lighthouse in a peaceful rustic environment is soon to be crowded by over a dozen homes in a site condominium project on the once natural setting.

Looking northwest up the "runway". This is the "airstrip" that Mr. Norman "Buck" Gotschall, used over 15 years ago. After purchasing the lighthouse, Mr. Gotschall opened a bed & breakfast, spurring more tourism and activity in the town of Big Bay. In order to keep the bed & breakfast operational and also conclude business still going on downstate, Mr. Gotschall provided an "airstrip" 100 feet wide (that left the barest margin of 33 feet between wing tip and trees!) by approximately1700 feet long. As soon as a minimum space was cleared and the native soil molded, Mr. Gotschall personally planted grass seed mixed with rye. As you can see in the photos taken above, this "airstrip" is now a beautiful nature setting and is the local deer favorite feeding area. If you are lucky enough to visit, you will surely see them every day at dusk and dawn, feeding on Mr. Gotschall's "runway" |
